CommentsCHANGES FOR SD CLASSIC 2010. There will be no more bond or calcutta, the entry fee for the 300 mi. race will be $300 if bird goes to race. There will be an optional $100 entry for the 200 mi. race with the first drop splitting the prize fund equally. Again this is OPTIONAL. All birds will go to the 200 mi. toss however only those nominated will be eligible for the prize money. This ensures we will be training the birds 200 miles, weather permitting, and hopefully improve the 300 mi. results. The Holiday Cup will have no changes. We will be accepting birds for both races starting APRIL 1, 2010.
CommentsHappy New Year to everybody!! We will begin sending birds back to the owners starting Monday, Jan. 4. If you have not notified us you want your birds back please do so asap. Send $40 for shipping to Steve Miner, 3511 Rolling Hills Ln., Bonita, Ca. 91902. To call: 619-933-8188 or email: sminervangruen@aol.com. We will be accepting birds on April 1st this year. More info about any changes will be posted by mid January.
CommentsIn addition to the 10 birds already listed on the previous message we have only 1 more bird home. That is Ron Pairan, LFO 878 at 12:29. All the other info you would be interested in is on the previous message sent earlier today.
CommentsThe Holiday Cup Superbird proved to be a very tough race. There were no day birds however we clocked one in at 6:32 in the morning which is very early. It's currently 12:15 on Thursday and we have 10 birds home out of the 40 shipped. The results are as follows:1) John Nemeth/BON 975, 2) Zulu Loft/Vangruen 1029-6:53, 3) Utaz Team SLI 9645-8:14, 4) Tie-Mike & Angela Partridge/Paso 522-8:31:56 and Nesler Boys/TCH 1977-8:31:57, 6) English Syndicate/WOR 161-10:10:35, 7) Dave Moore/Oaks 1943-10:10:38, 8) Don Barker/QS 3692-10:31, 9) Don Barker/QS 3778-10:47, 10) Win Syndicate/SV 452-11;14. The Mega race was won by the 5 birds on the drop at the Triple Crown Loft at 4:46 late Wed. afternoon. THATS RIGHT, 5 ON THE DROP IN ALMOST 10 HOURS-AMAZING!!!. John Timmerman had one day bird at 4:43 which will be 6th place in the Mega Race. You can look on the Triple Crown website to see what birds came in the drop. The one bird from the SD Classic has not arrived as of yet, the race will be a 3 day race since there were no day birds. Congratulations to John Nemeth and the other prize winners, second, third, and fourth. A complete sheet for both the HC Superbird and the Mega Race should be on this website in a couple days. I will keep the message board updated with birds as they arrive.
CommentsThe birds are up at 6:50 in Oracle, Az. which is about 40 miles north of Tucson. Jeff Smith assisted with the release and picked out the release point. Birds were transported in John Timmerman's trailer and well watered last evening as well as this morning. Weather looks great, clear at release, approximately 50% clouds in Yuma and El Centro, clear in the mountains and San Diego. Yuma shows 8-9 winds north to south and the mountains show 5-6 southeast winds. There are 158 birds released from the Cal. Classic, Triple Crown, Holiday Cup, and the 1 bird from the SD Classic. The prize breakdown for the Mega Race is: 1st-2410, 2nd-1807, 3rd-1205, and 4th-602. The Holiday Cup Superbird is 1st-2808, 2nd-2106, 3rd-1404, and 4th-702. The total prize fund for the SD Classic Superbird is 4,620. Good Luck to everybody and Merry Christmas!! Special thanks to all that supported the San Diego Races this year!!
CommentsShipping for the Superbird and Mega races is Tuesday, Dec. 15th at 12:00 at the San Diego Clubhouse. The race is Wednesday, Dec. 16th from Tucson, Az. The weather looks great, clear with slight north to south winds throughout the course. The Holiday Cup Superbird will have a $100 WTA pool only, no pools for the Mega Race. There will be 151 birds in the Mega and 40 birds in the Holiday Cup Superbird as it stands now. Only 1 bird in the SD Classic Superbird. If you would like to pool in the HC Superbird contact Steve Miner (619-933-8188). Good Luck to all!!
CommentsRon Steinbrenner, John Timmerman, and I had a meeting and decided to wait for good weather for sure and have decided to ship on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 12:00 at the SD Clubhouse for a Wednesday, Dec. 16th race. The release point will be just north of Tucson, Arizona. Jeff Smith, a respected pigeon man will be assisting with the release. There are 151 birds for the Mega Race at this time and 39 for the Holiday Cup Superbird. If anybody would like to nominate their birds for the Superbird and Mega you can do so for $500 for the Superbird and $100 for the Mega race. Conatact Steve Miner if interested. We have had 3 birds nominated for the 500-100 thus far. Any questions, call Steve Miner, 619-933-8188. Ahmad has been training the birds, 100 miles on Sunday and 75 miles today. He will have the birds ready to race!!
CommentsThe Utaz Team will be shipping their bird that returned the 4th day. They had entered it in both the Superbird and the Mega Race therefore we will have to wait to see if the bird makes it home in race time to win the Superbird Race, assuming no other birds get home from the Classic Race. Again, shipping will be Friday, Dec. 11 at 12:00 at the San Diego Clubhouse for the Superbird Holiday Cup and SD Classic as well as the Mega for all the races.
CommentsIf you would like your birds returned please send $40 to Steve Miner, 3511 Rolling Hills Ln., Bonita, Ca. 91902. Please include your address and phone # for mailing purposes. Amad has begun training for the Superbird and Mega, if you haven't notified us you want your bird back then it is being trained. We had 63 birds nominated for $100 ea. for the Superbird and approximately 200 birds nominated for the Mega Race in the Holiday Cup, California Classic, and the Triple Crown prior to the 300mi. race. We have 3 birds nominated for $500 for the Superbird and $100 for the Mega from the Holiday Cup. The prize money for both races will be distributed 40-30-20-10. Shipping for the 350 will be Friday, Dec. 11 at 12:00 at the San Diego Clubhouse. Pooling will be available on request, same pools available as the 300 mi. race.
CommentsAnother bird from the San Diego Classic came home today, SLI 9646, from Utaz Team, Tom Hill and the Jones Boys. It is not eligible for any prizes however it is nominated for the Superbird and Mega. We will have to wait to see if any other birds get home to see if we have a Superbird race. Obviously we have many birds from the other three races eligible for the Mega Race. Refunds for pooling will be in 2 weeks after we determine if we have a Superbird race or not. Any questions contact Steve Miner 619-933-8188.
CommentsEven with a third day there was only one bird home. Congrats to Jeffers and Losorda from Phoenix, Az. They win 22,723 and the Bond/Calcutta winners, Dave Dvorak and John Downey win 18,205. All pool money minus 10% will be refunded. Dave Dvorak, being the gentleman he is opted to take the bird home rather than send it to the Superbird which has 5200 in that prize fund. So Superbird and Mega entry will be refunded after we have a Board of Directors meeting. We have discussed the idea of giving the option to the breeders that entered the Superbird and Mega to put that money toward a perch fee next year plus a bonus free perch fee. Breeders will be notified.
CommentsWe still have only one bird home at 4:00 PM. We had a meeting with the board of directors and we have opened up the race for a third day. We have no rules governing the length of the race and we felt it would be in the best interest of everybody to open it up for one more day. Any questions call Steve Miner, 619-933-8188.
CommentsThe San Diego Classic has been a very difficult race. We had no day birds and our winner was clocked in at 9:18 AM today. The winner is Jeffers and Losorda from Phoenix Arizona, Congratulations!!! The weather took a turn for the worse from the report we took from Wunderground, the weather site that we use. The birds encountered severe head and cross winds thru the Yuma, Az. area and then hit rain around El Centro. The mountains were ok until Pine Valley, about 35 miles east of the clubhouse, where we got 5 inches of snow!!! Will keep the website updated.
CommentsThe San Diego Classic birds are up at 7:00, high overcast with 10-15 southeast wind at release. Internet shows clear in Yuma and El Centro with 10-15 west to south-west winds. Good luck to everybody!!
CommentsThe Holiday Cup birds are up at 7:00, clear and calm, 43 degrees. The weather looks great, cross winds in Yuma, north to south 10-15, east-northeast 5-10 in El Centro, and east-northeast 10-15 in the mountains. Good Luck!!!
CommentsThe San Diego Classic birds went 150 miles on Friday, 11/20 and we had a very good toss. There were 21 birds on 1st drop in 3 hrs. and 2 min., 4 min. later a drop of 24 and when I left at 12:00 we were out a few and I'm sure most were home later on. The results will be on the training link some time today. The Holiday Cup birds will be getting one more 75 mile toss either today or Sunday, depending on the weather. The weather long range forecast looks like a very good week for some great pigeon races in San Diego. The Triple Crown shipping starts tomorrow night at 7:00 at the hotel and we start our "greatest week of pigeon racing in the US." Hopefully we'll see you this week. A couple of noteworthy changes, Thanksgiving dinner will not be served at the San Diego Clubhouse this year. Ron Steinbrenner will be having Thanksgiving at his house, if you would like to be included please contact Ron for reservations, 619-398-5196. The other slight change, the dinner on Friday night at the hotel will be a London Broil and Salmon buffet with all the trimmings etc. We originally had scheduled a sit down dinner. There will be the "City of Hope Breeder Auction" immediately following dinner on Friday night.
CommentsThe 200 mile race for the Holiday Cup was a very successful race. We had 72 birds in the first drop in 3hrs.41 min., for @200 miles. There were 145 birds in @15 minutes, and when I left club at 1:30 we had 167 out of 178 home. Complete results will be on race link. The release point was clear and calm however there was 15-20 mile crosswinds in Yuma with some sandstorms along the way. The last 50-60 miles they had 10-15 mph tailwinds. The San Diego Classic birds had a tough toss on Saturday, 109 day birds and 10 more in when I left today. Complete results will be on the training link. They ran into very strong headwinds when they hit the mountains 50-60 miles from home. There will be one more long toss, 150 miles, for the Classic birds before the race. Good luck to everybody and we'll see you in a week!!!!!
CommentsThe 150 mile Holiday Cup Race results are on the races link, go down below the 2008 races and you will find 2009. We ended up losing 9 birds from the 150. The 200 mile race is this Sunday, Nov.15, shipping on Saturday, Nov.14 at 4:00 at the San Diego Clubhouse. The weather looks good for Sunday, Ahmad took the Holiday's 75 miles today, Nov. 11, turned them out in 2 groups 5 minutes apart. Thursday and Friday don't look too good for training. The San Diego Classic birds will go again on Saturday, 125 miles. Training page for SD Classic is up to date. For those of you mailing in pool sheets for the Holiday Cup send to either: Steve Miner, 3511 Rolling Hills Ln., Bonita, Ca. 91902 or Wayne Herron, 1828 Jalisco Rd., El Cajon, Ca. 92109.
CommentsThe birds for the Holiday Cup 150 mi. race were brought back to @135 mi. due to heavy fog. They were released at 8:30 AM and should be home in approx. two 1/2 to 3 hrs. So around 11:00-11:30. Good luck to everybody.
CommentsThe shipping list for the 150 mi. Holiday Cup race is on the Basket Birds link. We shipped 188 birds, the activated list will be on the website asap. The Classic Birds went 95 mi. (not 80) on Nov. 5, the results are on the training page. We dropped 15 birds, why, I have no idea. The large majority came great and oddly we only got one second day bird. I just talked to John Timmerman, who is in Yuma with our drivers and they hit a thick fog and haze layer about 25 miles west of Yuma. We have decided to bring birds back on the west side of the fog and release there. It will be @ 125 mi. rather than the 150. We would much rather be careful with the weather than have a disaster race at this time. It appears birds will be released @ 8:30 AM. I will have definite release time on this page as soon as we know.
CommentsThe drivers for the 150 mi. race met John Timmerman in Yuma and they both ran into heavy fog and haze about 25 west of Yuma. We are taking the birds back on the west side of the fog bank and releasing from there. The release time will be on this message board as soon as we have a release. Right now its 7:30 AM so I would estimate the release to be @ 8:30 AM. I will keep this message board updated.
CommentsThe shipping list for the 150 mi. Holiday Cup Race is listed on the Basket birds link. We shipped 188 birds, the activated list will be put on the website asap. The weather looks good for the race, a little hazy but definite sun shining at Yuma and overcast but should be burned off by the time the birds arrive at the loft. The Classic birds went 95 miles (not 80) on Nov. 5 and we dropped 15 birds, why, I have not idea. The large majority came great, we only had 1 2nd day bird.
CommentsWe ended up with 170 birds home today, we're out 14, hopefully more home tomorrow. There were 4 birds that came in after 4:00 that Frankie didn't get on the report for today. They will be added on when we update the 2nd day birds tomorrow night. The Holiday Cup birds will be going Wednesday rather than tomorrow. The weather has been excellent however it was pretty warm today. It's supposed to be a little cooler Wednesday.
CommentsI have to apologize, we had computer problems and the 100 mi. toss for the Holiday Cup on Saturday got erased by mistake. The Holiday's are going 115 tomorrow and that should be posted Tuesday evening. The Classics went 75 miles this morning and @150 of them made good time however we were out almost 30 birds by 10:00 this morning. They were released at 6:20 and the large majority came in a group at 7:58, this toss will be posted tonite. Race time is just around the corner, you will be getting entry forms for the Classic soon, as well as pool sheets for the Holiday Cup 300 Mi. race. Just a reminder on the Superbird Race and the Mega Classic. They are the 2nd race 2 weeks later from350 Mi. The entry for the Superbird is $100 and the Mega is $25 if paid prior to the 300 mi. race. If you wait until after the 300 mi. race the entry goes up to $500 for the Superbird and $100 for the Mega. You must enter the Superbird in order to enter the Mega. The Mega Classic is where birds from all the San Diego Races compete against each other from 350 mi.
CommentsThe last toss for the Holiday Cup birds on Oct. 27 was a tough one for many of the birds. They came in broken up and we were out 42 birds the first day. However they came in like gangbusters on the 2nd day, 29 birds almost all of them in the morning. On the first day we many make good time however many straggled in. We had a drop of 8 birds after 6 hours which again shows the superb conditioning they are in. We ended up losing 8-9 birds only. They will be going 100 tomorrow, Sat. Oct. 31. The Classic birds went 50 miles on Oct.29 and then 60 miles today, Oct. 30. Both tosses almost all of them came together, they are looking real good. The next weeks weather looks very good so we should have more good tosses. Remember to get your entry in for the Holiday Cup this week unless you are coming to shipping on Saturday Nov. 7 at 4:00 at our clubhouse.
CommentsTraining is going well however we seem to have a couple come back either cut up or broken leg(s). Owners have been contacted, hopefully things will get better as we go. The Holiday Cup birds went down on the desert floor (70 miles) yesterday and the first group made excellent time however they came in broken up. The last big group were on the wing almost 3 hours. In my opinion the reason a big group (30 birds) stayed together that long is the fact they are in such good shape. They really fly well around the loft and they have been well trained. The Classic birds have come in broken up a couple times however they have done well in returns (except hurt birds). Check the training link for results. The entry forms for the Holiday Cup have been mailed out so check the training link to see if your birds are still active. If you plan on coming to shipping for the 150 you can pay your entry at that time. Any questions call Steve Miner or Wayne Herron, numbers are on the entry forms.
CommentsAmad took the Holiday Cup birds 40 miles on Thursday, however the clocking didn't register. They will go again on Sunday. The Classics went 25 miles on Friday however our clocking system is temporarily on the blink so we weren't able to clock them in either. They will go either Sunday or Monday. Training is going well, we are out a few of the Classics from Friday however I'm confident they will trickle in. We're pretty confident we have the clocking problems solved. You will be receiving entry forms for the Holiday Cup in the near future via US mail. Check the latest training toss results to see if your birds are still here. If bird doesn't go to the 150 there will be a refund. Thanks, Steve
CommentsThe last 2 training tosses for the Holiday Cup are listed under the training page and Tuesday's toss for the SD Classic will be posted Wednesday, Oct. 7. We started training 233 birds in the Holiday Cup, we lost several to hawks etc. The hawks have been relentless however the good news is they are keeping the birds in the air for a long time (sometimes 2-3 hours) so they are getting in excellent shape. We will continue to post the training tosses for both races. The dates for the 150 and 200 for the Holiday Cup have been set (unless bad weather). The 150 will be Sunday, Nov. 8 and the 200 will be Sunday, Nov. 15. The 300, Holiday Cup will be Wednesday, Nov.25. The shipping for the 150 and 200 will be on the Saturday, day before the race, and will be shipped from the San Diego Clubhouse at 4:00. We will be sending out entry forms well in advance. Any questions contact Steve Miner, 619-933-8188 or Wayne Herron, 619-579-8537.
CommentsTraining for the Holiday Cup has commenced. Ahmad started training on Sunday, Sept. 27. We had to wait a few days longer because of the extreme heat we had last week. Ahmad will be training every day for at least a week or so. In the next couple days we will have a clocking inventory for the Holiday Cup. The Classic training will start in a week or so. We will keep you informed of training progress. Birds are looking great!
CommentsUpdate on the birds: Flights are 80-90% grown out and Ahmad has been letting them out early in the mornings. We've had some very hot weather the last few days so he is being careful. Health is great, they are molting like crazy and everything points to a great year. Training will commence in 2-3 weeks and we will be putting clocking results on the website after we get out to 40-50 miles. You should be making hotel reservations asap. See the map&info link for details on the hotel. Any questions you can contact me at 619-933-8188.
CommentsEntries are officially closed as of today, Aug. 1. We have received just over 250 birds for both races, the San Diego Classic and the Holiday Cup. The birds are doing great, the 9th & 10th have been clipped and pulled and the health is going great. We did have to replace 3-4 birds in the Classic and we lost 5-6 off the loft in the Holiday Cup. Otherwise all is well. They will be out exercising in 2-3 weeks and training will commence around the middle of September. Of course training results will be on our website once we get out to 40-50 miles. Go to Map&Info link for information for our hotel this year, the Courtyard Marriott. Any questions don't hesitate to call me, 619-933-8188 cell. Steve Miner Just a quick note for those who do not know. I enter birds in the Classic and Holiday Cup just like you. I do not go in the loft, I don't handle the birds, I have nothing to do with the handling of the birds. Ahmad Morat is our handler and has been the last 5-6 years and has done a great job. He is one of our best if not the best flyer in San Diego. Good Luck
CommentsWe currently have 251 birds in the Holiday Cup and 248 in the SD Classic. The birds are doing great, Ahmad says most are flying and many ranging. This week we will be shutting them down and clip and pull the 9th and 10th. They will be in the loft 3-4 weeks. We still are accepting birds, we have a few more coming in that we know of. We've lost just 5-6 birds either off the loft (hawks) or a couple were not doing well so we eliminated them. Owners have been notified and sent replacements. Thanks again to all our breeders that have once again made our races and the entire Thanksgiving week the best week of pigeon racing in the US.
CommentsThe birds have continued to come in. We now have 243 Holiday Cup birds and 228 SD Classic birds. We have extended our date to accept birds, we have 4 breeders that will be sending in birds next week. Since we are not full we will continue to accept birds. The birds are doing well, Amad will be clipping the 9th and 10th the second week in July. They will be locked up 3-4 weeks while the flights grow out. Make sure to make your reservations with our new hotel, the Courtyard Marriott. See Map&Info link. Thanks again to all the breeders supporting our races this year.
CommentsWe now have 230 birds in the Holiday Cup and 210 in the SD Classic. We are accepting birds until July 1, 2009. However since we are not full we will accept birds later if you let us know. Health has been good, we did lose a couple birds off the loft and we did have to replace a couple others. Check out our Map&Info link for info on our new hotel. Thank you for supporting our races and I assure you we take very good care of your birds. Ahmad Morat, our loft manager for both races has been our top flyer for the last couple years. Any questions, my cell is 619-933-8188.
CommentsThe updated inventory should be posted by Sat., June 6. The current bird count is SD Classic 185 and Holiday Cup 179. We received 25-30 birds the last 2-3 days and we anticipate many more. The birds are in great health and going out almost daily. We inventoried the SD Classic birds this week and we are not missing any birds. We still need to do the same to the Holidays which we will be doing this week. Thanks and keep checking the updates.
CommentsThe birds are doing great in both races. The birds health is excellent, no sick ones yet, knock on wood. Ahmad does a great job of keeping the birds healthy. Birds have been out several times, a couple of times the Classics have gone up due to hawk scare, we will be taking inventory today to see if we lost any off the loft. There are over 150 birds in the SD Classic and just under 150 in the Holiday Cup and we are receiving birds almost every day. I just emailed the updated entries to our webmaster and they should be posted within a couple of days. Remember to make your reservations for the hotel before Thursday, Oct. 29 to get the $109 rate. See map & info link for hotel info or go to their website, www.marriott.com/sanal.
CommentsSteve, Please update the message board, Thanks, Frankie |
